Family Days

The Malcolm Knapp Research Forest is now offering Family Days led by Wild & Immersive. Join us for a fun and interactive 2-hour workshop. Each Family Day will focus on a different topic and set of activities. See schedule below. Cost is only $10 per family. Email to register.

Sunday January 13, 2019: Wayfinding in the Woods

Time: 1pm-3pm

Find your way through the woods by learning how to navigate using a compass. Understand the meaning of true North and follow bearings to hidden locations. Participants will gain an understanding of compass and map basics in a fun and engaging way!

Sunday February 10, 2019: An Ecological Walk Through the Woods

Time: 10am-12pm

Participants will get a chance to dig a little deeper into forest science and plant identification in this workshop. Participants can get their hands dirty and gain an understanding of the mineral and organic components, formation, and importance of soil.

Participants will also explore the different plant species in the region, their human uses, and ecosystem significance, through guided hikes, learning stations, and more.

Sunday February 24, 2019: Survive the Wild

Time: 1pm-3pm

The best laid plans of hikers and campers often go awry. In this module, participants will learn what items to pack when exploring the outdoors. Participants will also learn basic survival skills, such as how to start a fire, how to collect fresh water, and how to build a shelter.
