Job Description We are seeking a dynamic and resourceful individual to create the framework and jump-start a forestry- education extension program at Malcolm Knapp Research Forest (MKRF). MKRF has a long and rich history of research projects (over 1,000 since its inception in 1949) and also hosts 1000s of visitors annually. Our vision, is to now share the stories and learnings of the MKRF through the creation of various online and in-person educational avenues (e.g., videos, signboards, website, tour content, and social media) to various target audiences. The internship will require a planning and development phase that outlines extension opportunities and considerations. The successful candidate would also lead the organization of existing content and creation of new material.

This position will also provide the graduate intern with practical exposure to outdoor teaching, silviculture, forest health issues, fuel management (i.e. wildfire), and harvest planning and operations.

Assistance with management planning projects may be required. Special projects based on the successful candidate’s interests and abilities may also be considered.

Job Requirements This is a non-union, full-time, term position in Maple Ridge. The work-week is 37.5 hours (8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break). Occasional weekends and altered hours may be required for particular events/projects. This position will require working outdoors in all weather conditions, driving a 4×4 vehicle (supplied) on gravel roads, and competence with field navigation.


Applicants must be enrolled as graduate student (including those in the MSFM program).  Candidates will preferably be in the UBC Faculty of Forestry, a Canadian resident, and have completed an undergraduate degree in forestry or related field.  Graduate students who have newly completed their degree (winter 2020 or spring 2021 term) will also be considered.  This position requires a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods.


Applicants must have a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License, and a clean driving record. First-aid certification, familiarity with MS Excel, Avenza maps and ESRI GIS products, and Forester in Training status with the Association of BC Forest Professionals, would be considerable assets.
